Welcome to Healthy Living!

Most of us want to live a healthier life, but it is sometimes a daunting task trying to sift through the often-conflicting information we are given, in an effort to find what will work for us. We have all heard the ongoing debate about whether low-carb diets are healthy or bad for us and the varied opinions about which carbs we should be eating. There is the accepted opinion that coffee/caffeine has a harmful effect on your life and then the newer opinion that it is actually beneficial. The same is true for alcohol - red wine to be specific - does it kill brain cells or does is that negated due to the positive, healthy effects it seems to have on the heart? These debates are only the tip of the iceberg . . .
While the previous issues address what we should and shouldn't be eating, there is also the question of what to do if we have developed some ill effects (not feeling well, no energy, weight gain, disease) and want to reverse them. There are so many possible solutions. Do we fast - and if so what kind of fast (juice, water, fruit)? Do we need to detox? If so - how? Herbal cleanses, colonics, saunas, body wraps, sea water baths, Epsom salt baths? What herbs will help heal our bodies and in what quantities? And what about the alternative therapies: massage, Reiki, bio-feedback, hypnotherapy, meditation, light therapy, aromatherapy (to name only a few!)? Which of these would help us in our particular situation?
How to make sense of all this information? We would like to have this site be a place to discuss which things have worked for us (or haven't) and hopefully by sharing our experiences we will be able to help each other wade through all the possibilities and find our own paths to a Healthy Life!

Aromatherapy - A Treat For Your Senses!

Certain scents bring on sense and memory responses from your body. Does the smell of apple pie remind you of Grandma's kitchen, or a certain cologne remind you a special date, or the smell of fish tacos remind you of a vacation in Mexico? All of these scents and the memories they bring up can improve your mood. Using scents to help improve your mental state or your physical health is the basis of aromatherapy and has been used for thousands of years. You can easily bring the healing power of aromatic scent into your home, car or office with aromatherapy products.

Quality aromatherapy oils are called essential oils. These are concentrated oils that the skin can absorb quickly, or the oils can be used in an aromatherapy diffuser to add scent to a room. Aromatherapy essential oils also come in small vials so that they easily fit in your purse, briefcase, or workout bag, allowing you to bring your aromatherapy treatment with you wherever you go.

Adding a little bit of heat to the oil helps to diffuse the oil throughout the air in a room. Heat can be added via candles or electric light bulbs lightly heating the oil held in a small dish above the heat. If you want to spread these heady scents throughout a larger space, you could choose an electric aromatherapy diffuser. Small diffusers will also fit into your car cigarette lighter, or can be worn like a necklace around your neck for personal aromatherapy. You can even find small diffusers that are glass jars with a reed inserted into the mouth of the bottle, where you simply put a little oil into the jar and the fragrance is diffused via the reed.

You can also use aromatherapy lotion after your next shower or bath to renew your skin's moisture. Oils can be combined for a blissful combinations which can be used for massages, and add to the massage's ability to relax your body and relieve pain.
The fun comes in experimenting with all of the different scents of aromatherapy essential oils. Eucalyptus essential oil can help you breathe a bit easier the next time you have a cold or your allergies are acting up, while lavender oil has been used for centuries to help us relax - try rubbing a little lavender oil on your temples when you next have a headache!
